Jason Collins (born December 2, 1978) is a professional basketball player. Collins made LGBTQ (black) history when he signed with the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in February 2014, becoming the first publicly gay athlete to play in any of four major North American pro sports leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL). Collins revealed that in his coming out piece for Sports Illustrated that he plays with the number 98 in honor of the late Matthew Shepard, who was murdered in 1998. President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and former President Bill Clinton all offered praise and support to Collins, who was an All–American in 2000-01.
